15-16 April 2011
The Fabricate 2011 conference was the first conference dedicated to digital fabrication means, organized by the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London on 15th and 16th of April 2011. It was the first conference we attended where the main focus drifted from computation and virtual models and all the presented papers discussed the way we build and make architecture using digital fabrication tools. This presented a great shift for computationaly driven architecture and its possibilities and showcased a great number of projects that were actualy built using these technologies and how they managed to do it.
One might say that it was a cornerstone for computer aided design and manugfacture of digital architecture and it showed the great potential of digital tools to develop physical artefacts. The conference gathered keynote speakers from all over the world, such as Mark Burry (presenting his work on Sagrada Familia), Neri Oxman (and her 3d printed design objects) Matthis Kohler (usign robots for digital fabrication) and a surprisigly enthusiast Enric Ruiz-Geli (talking about how digital tools enable him to design and make better buildings).
